I know that many people probably don’t know her, but I always thought she’s been an inspirational actress. Türkan Soray, or ‘The Sultan of Turkish Cinema’, is a turkish actress born in 1945 to a poor family, and she made her debut at the young age of 15. Soon enough, after some stereotypical failed turkish romances, she became one of the leading actresses in Turkey and was compared to Hollywood actresses like Liz Taylor (also one of my favourites). What made her so different to the others were not only her distinct looks, as she was exceptionally beautiful, but also the fact that she quickly gained the respect of the turkish people.
In a time were actresses were used and abused in the business she made it clear that she won’t bend to society’s rules and not ler her reputation be diminished. You could see here in the roles of peasant girls, prostitutes, mothers etc, her characters were always nothing less than strong.
My very first, and lasting, impression of her was from the film ‘The Girl with the Red Scarf’, wherein she plays a village girl who falls in love with a truck driver and elopes with him. But he leaves her behind with their son and, abandoned by her family, she is trying to make her own way. I have never been this affected by an actress, whatever hardships she had to suffer she was never anything less than a strong woman.
She should be in all movies.
(PS: Definitely check out that film http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0G_lsI1aSVA it is probably the most famous turkish film and the tune is still incredibly popular in Turkey)
